Some insight into Google's Indexing

A couple of months ago, I bought the domain, put up some optimized content, added a couple of incoming links and not the site is #1 for "Building Waterwalls" on Google. The interesting thing about this site is it gives us some insight into what Google feels is very most important.

Sidenote -- This site is not ranked #1 on Yahoo! or MSN, the second and third largest search engines.

It seems that in Google's algorithm, the URL is the very most important aspect of the site followed by the incoming links and the content on the site. This site contains only two pages, just for reference.

So, how do you build your site for Google?

Over the past three years, I have been testing multiple sites. I build them, optimize them, link to them and see how Google ranks them. It seems that most of the work I do takes anywhere from 3 months to 8 months to really show results, but what I have found is that Google is quite simple in what they are looking for when it comes to ranking your site in their all important index.

First and foremost is your domain name.

You should take extreme care when choosing a domain name. Most people rush into this decision and choose their own name, their business' name or something that is available. I have even seen people choose .tv domains, presumably because the .com, .net, .org and .info were taken. Bad decision. While it is beyond the scope of this post to get into the ins and outs of choosing a domain name, it is important to reiterate how to choose the right domain name. First and foremost, research the keywords to see what people are searching for. Then, and only then, buy a domain name with those keywords in it.

"I have my domain name, now what?"

Now that you have your domain name, it is time to add some optimized content. Take a look at the Building Waterwalls site again. You will see that I have intentionally placed the text, headings, and keywords in specific places to help Google determine what this site is about. You have to write content on the site that is new, unique, relevant to your keyword topic and doesn't break Google's rules.

UPDATE 8-5-07:

I was looking at the screenshot above again and noticed that another one of my sites comes up #6 in those results simply because it has a link to the #1 site. That is an outgoing link only and Building Waterwalls does not link back to www.sc-site.com.
