Know Your Audience

Who do you want reading and visiting your site

"Hello Philadelphia.....uh.....I mean Pittsburgh"

Long before buying a domain or putting pen to paper, you should know your audience. You should know your market. How do you get a grasp on who you are marketing to you ask? Start by asking yourself important questions that help to define how you are going to build your website. For each web site that I have designed and market, I start by identifying who it is that will be visiting and who I am "talking" to when building a website.

"You need to have a destination to know where you are going. Once you have a destination, you can more easily build a road map to get there."

Questions to ask yourself prior to buying a domain

  • Do you want your site to give more information about your company like a digital brochure?
  • Are you trying to sell products directly from your site?
  • Where can you sell your products or services? Are you limited to a geographical area like a Home Inspector or Real Estate Agent? Or could you sell your product all over the nation like an author?
  • Do you want to be found by the search engines or will most of your visitors already know who you are?
  • Are you going to have a local site; that is to say, a site based on things in a geographic location?
  • Are there other sites that are selling, promoting, offering or showcasing the same products or services?
  • Would you be better served with a blog rather than a traditional website? (you still may want a domain)
  • Finish this sentence: "I want my website to bring me more _____________."

This should help you get started in figuring out what you are building and who it is for.
